RECORDING LIST:

The Misfits, like many other low-budget bands, recorded sporadically at many different studios during their early years. Recording sessions often took place over many months, with long breaks in between. Very few written records were kept, and it is very possible that tapes were lost, stolen, or accidentally disposed of.

Misfits recording sessions were usually recorded "live in the studio" onto multi-track tapes. A multi-track tape is a 2 inch tape that plays in only one direction and has a certain number of tracks or channels. Most Misfits sessions were recorded on 8 or 16 track tapes.

The multi-track tapes include everything recorded during the session, from talking in between songs to alternate takes of the songs with mistakes. The best takes of the selected songs are then mixed and transferred to a 1/4 inch master tape. This tape, in turn, can be mastered (by adusting the high or low end, for instance). A song from one multi-track tape may often be transferred to another tape to re-record certain tracks; in the case of The Misfits, several different mixes of a song may be identical except for a slight variation in an instrumental or vocal track.

The following section lists all recording sessions and the mixes of songs produced that have been distributed legally or on bootlegs. Each entry includes the song title, playing time, album of release, and any known information about the session. Alternate mixes are listed whenever possible. The * symbol denotes remixes or re-recordings of songs from an earlier session tape that were transferred to another tape. ________________________________________________________________________ _____

Format: 16 Track tape Lineup: [3] + Glenn Danzig: Keyboards (Track 14) Notes: This recording session was recorded on three 16 track tapes. Because some releases of these songs (on BULLET, BEWARE, COLLECTION I, and COLLECTION II) were taken from Glenn Danzig's original mix-down tape, and the other releases (BOX SET SAMPLER, BOX SET CD 4, and STATIC AGE) were taken from Franche's copy of the mix-down tape, slight differences in quality may be observed. Tracks 15-17 were taken directly from the actual 2 inch session master tape and mixed on 2/24/97. The STATIC AGE version of "Bullet" leaves off the "1-2-3-4" introduction included on previous releases. The COLLECTION II versions were remastered in 1987 from Glenn's mix-down tape. The mixes included on LEGACY OF BRUTALITY (tracks 1-3, 6, 9-10, 14-16) were partially re-recorded in 1985, and are listed in further detail below. ________________________________________________________________________ _____

The SESSIONS disc of MISFITS BOX SET features a remastered, un-overdubbed version of the original session (tracks 1a-5a). Track 4c (the BOX SET version of the 7" version of "Teenagers From Mars") is missing the vocal introduction by the session engineer. The date listed on the insert to the HORROR BUSINESS single is incorrect. Track 5c is a remastered version of the HORROR BUSINESS 7" mix. ________________________________________________________________________ _____

Format: 16 Track tape Lineup: [5] (Tracks 2-4, 9-12) + Robbie Alter: Guitar (Track 11) [5+6] (Tracks 1, 5-8) + Robbie Alter: Guitar (Track 5) Notes: This recording session took place while Bobby Steele was in the band, although Doyle later added guitar tracks to several of the songs. Producer Robbie Alter also played guitar on two songs. One of the mixes of "Skulls" that came from this tape has a fade-out ending (track 4b), whereas the other (track 4a) comes to a stop. The original mix of "Halloween II" features a chorus taken from "Halloween" added to the end. Before being released on the HALLOWEEN 7", a different drum track was recorded and the guitar work was credited to Doyle, although Bobby's slide guitar was preserved entirely. The original mix of "Halloween" was included on LEGACY OF BRUTALITY. An alternate recording from this session was used for release on the HALLOWEEN single. Time differences for some of these mixes can also be attributed to varying tape speeds. COLLECTION II versions of these tracks are remastered. ________________________________________________________________________ _____

Format: 16 Track tape Lineup: [6] (Tracks 1-6) [6] + Glenn Danzig (instead of Doyle): Guitar (Track 7) Notes: Tracks 3-6 have been widely distributed on bootlegs such as A WALK AMONG THE DEAD. "20 Eyes" is extremely similar to the August 1981 version but has a simpler drum beat, a different guitar strumming style, and a slightly different vocal track. "I Turned Into A Martian" includes a different vocal track and a variant guitar solo, as well as a slightly different ending. "Astro Zombies" has a simpler drum track and a prominent extra vocal track. "Devils Whorehouse" has an extra vocal track in the background and slightly different music. These songs are slower than later takes and include much guitar feedback. A different mix of "Hate Breeders" appeared on WALK AMONG US. ________________________________________________________________________ _____

Format: 16 Track Tape Lineup: [6] + Glenn Danzig: Keyboards (Track 6) Notes: This take of "Devils Whorehouse" was transferred to other tapes and remixed for release on WALK AMONG US and later for COLLECTION II. An extended mix of "Vampira" with the bass fuzz ending (track 4b) exists on bootleg tapes. Although the Misfits never actually recorded at Reel Platinum (the studio opened after the band broke up in 1983), tracks 1-5 are referred to as Reel Platinum on the MISFITS BOX SET because the session master was stored by Glenn in a Reel Platinum box. Track 6 was probably originally part of this session, although it was stored on a separate tape. Track 6a is an alternate mix of track 6b, with a slightly lower keyboard. Track 6c has a different vocal track, no guitar solo, and a higher pitched keyboard track; it originally surfaced on a demo tape of side 1 of the original Plan 9 Records WALK AMONG US album which was not released. Tracks 6a and 6c are available on bootleg demo tapes; track 6c is also included on the VAMPIRA bootleg CD. ________________________________________________________________________ _____

The mix of "Hate Breeders" also came from August 1981. The mix of "Devils Whorehouse" is a slightly different mix of the August 1981 version. One mix of "All Hell Breaks Loose" (track 3a) was included on a tape of the Plan 9 Records version of WALK AMONG US that was never released. It features slightly different volume levels on the guitar and drums. Little else is known about this tape. ________________________________________________________________________ _____

Format: 16 Track tape Lineup: [7] Notes: The EARTH AD recording session began at a warehouse during the very early hours of June 11, 1983. Glenn slept through most of the session, providing complete vocals on only 3 of the songs. The original recording of the session (track 1a-6a) includes slightly different lyrics on some of the songs. The rest of the vocals and instrumentation were added by the band a month later at Fox Studio. The extended version of "Mommy, Can I Go Out And Kill Tonight?" has an extra second of feedback at the end. The COLLECTION II versions of these tracks were remastered. The version of "We Bite" on COLLECTION II lacks the "1-2-3-4" intro. The MISFITS BOX SET versions of these tracks were also remastered from a different tape. Tracks 1a-6a are available on several bootleg tapes; track 3a has a slightly different vocal track. ________________________________________________________________________ _____ 7/83: Fox Studio; Rutherford, NJ

The recordings from this session include bass and guitar overdubs done by Glenn around 1985, as documented by Glenn in Black Market #6 (1986). This version of "Some Kinda Hate" includes the "1, 2, 3, 4!" introduction that was left off the STATIC AGE version. This version of "She" leaves off the "1, 2, 3, 4!" introduction included on the STATIC AGE version. ________________________________________________________________________ _____

1* 20 Eyes 1:45 BOX3 2* Violent World 1:36 BOX3

Format: 16 Track tape Lineup: [6] Notes: The two songs included on this tape are remixes of earlier versions, intended for release on the ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK compilation album, which was aborted. The remixes were done by Glenn sometime between 1981 and 1986 at Reel Platium. A full listing of all 15 tracks on the album master tape can be found on the first two pages of Eerie Von's liner notes in the MISFITS BOX SET. "Violent World" was recorded during the MSP session (see above) and the original mix of "20 Eyes" appeared on WALK AMONG US. Other than the slight mixing difference, these tracks are identical to the originals and feature no overdubs. ________________________________________________________________________ _____

Glenn re-recorded the vocals for "Cough/Cool" and added a guitar track, a new bass track, and an extra drum track using a drum machine. Part of the original drum track is preserved at the beginning of this re-recording. The majority of the instrumental tracks for "Devils Whorehouse" came from the Reel Platinum session. The drum track to "Nike A Go Go" was taken from the Mix-O-Lydian version. Glenn had originally planned to release COLLECTION II in 1988 (as shown in a Plan 9 merchandise listing from that year), so these tracks were probably recorded around May 1986, when he first announced "discovering" them in Black Market #6. ________________________________________________________________________ _____
